Who were the Essenes?

Dead Sea Scroll from the Essene community at Qumran

We have recently had a lot of exposure to a group of people called the Essenes. The majority view at the moment states that they were the people who lived at Wadi Qumran. They are believed to be the owners of the scrolls that were found in the Judean desert. They are also known for the fact that they did not use the lunar calendar but rather a solar calendar. This makes it clear that they did not follow the norm of the Pharisees and Sadducees of their time. Except for these two facts, what else do we know about this group? Did they have truth that we should be aware of? We will also investigate the potential links between Y´Shua and John the Baptist to the Essenes.

How should we pray?

We have discussed the basic of way we should pray and what prayer can achieve in our lives. Now we will focus a bit more on the act of praying. We will investigate what the Scriptures say about things like attitude, frequency and posture. Hopefully, this will provide us with an even more holistic view of prayer.

Prayer - woman with head covering

Prayer is something most believers take for granted. There should be no need to do a study to convince believers that praying is something they should do on a regular basis. However, when we get into a bit more detail, we still find a lot of varying positions and teachings on specific dimensions of prayer. With this study we focus on what the Scriptures teach us about prayer. We look at some of the reasons for praying and what the outcome of prayer is. Can we see what YHVH wants from us in prayer?

Modesty…the holy and the profane

Written by Schalk_and_Elsa. Posted in Modesty

We recently received a comment on an article we posted on modesty. This article was written by an anonymous author. It gave his point of view on modesty. This prompted us to write our understanding of what is written in the Word on modesty, so here it is. This article is not only about modesty, but also about the holy and the profane; the set apart and the common.

We live in a time where moral values have become unimportant and people, for the most part, live for self. Modesty is not something that is considered in worldly circles, on the contrary; it is regularly laughed at. Being immodestly dressed is even considered trendy. The profane is elevated and set apartness is scoffed at. It is one of the signs of the times we live in. Immodesty is one of the devices Satan uses to destroy moral values, marriages and our youth. In this study, we shall learn about set apart modesty. Set apart modesty is about distinguishing between the holy and the profane. This includes dress, behavior and speech.
